Jesus instructed us to, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
I don't mean to imply all we do is try to get to heaven while the world falls to pieces, we have to do what we can, but many things we have no say over and cannot control. But we can prepare for the world to come after this one. "but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."

That's right, and what does it profit a man if he lives in a great country but loses his own soul?

We care for and love others ever more as we purify ourselves. It is the opposite of the Pharisees.
